Asaba Ryokan, a 346-year-old historic ryokan, is known as the first place of “Japanese-style hot spring hotel” and the birthplace of “one berth and two food”.

Location

Set in Izu, surrounding by greenery in the pretty inland hot spring onsen town Shuzenji, which is the heart of the picturesque and mountainous Izu Peninsula – the perfect setting for a serene overnight trip from the capital.

It takes only a few hours south of Tokyo by train. About 8 minutes walk from Shuzenji Onsen Station.

Rooms

There are 19 Japanese-style rooms at Asaba Ryokan as well as 4 deluxe rooms. All rooms are designed in a classic ryokan style of the highest quality. You can enjoy and relax in the room with comfortable tatami mat floor spaces with sliding paper screens, futon beds, elegant flower arrangements and calligraphic scrolls in every room. All have large windows framing haiku-inspiringly perfect views across the garden, lake and stage side. Deep wooden bathtub is available for specific rooms.

Hot spring (Onsen)

In Asaba Ryokan, shared indoor and outdoor hot spring baths are available. The indoor baths of koyamaki timber are separated into mens and ladies baths, while outdoor bath offering views of the pond and surrounding gardens.

Soothing indoor hot spring bath is also available for private rental. A family can hang a sign outside of and enjoy the “family bath” privately.

Dining

Seasonal cuisine is the highlight at Asaba Ryokan. The traditional kaiseki meal consists of a variety of beautifully presented seasonal delicacies that range from a hotpot of sea eel and matsutake mushrooms to delicate sashimi flavors, embodied in beautifully presented dishes that delight both the palate and the eyes.

All meals are served in-room, eaten while kneeling at a low table. Guests are invited to slip into cotton kimono-style yukatas before the meal is served. The whole experience accords with traditional Japanese ryokan customs, a strain of sensibilities derived from royalty.

Niji no Sato is an amusement park themed on people, nature, and culture. It offers various workshops, it has a Japanese garden, and through the park runs a mini steam locomotive. Surrounding by flowers and exotic mood, this park is a popular destination for families and cosplayers.
Izunokuni Panorama Park (8 km)
Izu Panorama Park sits at the gateway to Izu Peninsula in Izu Nagaoka, a famous area for hot springs and for the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, which has been registered as a World Cultural Heritage, making it an ideal spot to see the best side of Izu. During the cable car journey up to the park, you can see the panoramic view of Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay and Hakone surrounding by flowers and trees.
Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls (18.9 km)
The Kawazu Nanadaru are seven waterfalls in the mountains above Kawazu Town in southeastern Izu. The waterfalls are of varying shapes and sizes, from the 30 meter tall Odaru (large waterfall) to the 2 meter tall Kanidaru (crab waterfall). A pleasant walking trail leads for about one kilometer through the forest and past the waterfalls.
Mishima Taisha Shrine (19 km)
Mishima Taisha Shrine is the first shrine in Izu. The main festival of the shrine is held annually on August 16, and features yabusame performances.
Mount Omuro (24 km)
Mount Omuro is a 580 meter tall mountain, and one of the largest volcanoes in the Izu region. It was an active volcano about 4000 years ago.
Kamiike Pond (25 km)
Kamiike Pond is one of the seven wonders of Izu, a mysterious pond surrounded by the sea, yet filled with freshwater carp.
Atami Sun Beach (29 km)
Atami Sun Beach is one of the most popular resort beaches in Shizuoka. It is 400 meters wide along resort hotels and palm trees. The beach is to be illuminated in the night to be a fantastical “Moon Light Beach”, which is very popular among couples.
