Hamarikyu the Japanese Historical Garden
The Hamarikyu is a Japanese historical garden in Chuo ward, Tokyo.
The feature of this garden is the pond of seawater, which is the only one in Tokyo. People can enjoy its scenery with its level changing by the tides. On the pond, there is a bridge that will lead you to a small island. A tea room in this island will make you relax with nice green tea and a small Japanese confectionery.
The Hamarikyu was first built as a villa for Shogun in 1654, and then has changed its role as an imperial villa and was opened to public in 1946 as a garden.
It has two gates, Otemon gate and Nakanogomon gate. The Otemon gate is just 7 minutes’ walk from Tsukizisijo station and Shiodome station of Toei subway, Oedo line.
If you have a plan to visit Tukizi, then you can enjoy Japanese sushi or any fresh seafood at Tukizi and can walk from/to the Hamarikyu.
If you have a plan to visit Asakusa or Tokyo Skytree, then you can take a waterbus from/to enjoy cruise and the Hamarikyu.
The Hamarikyu is normally open from 9am to 5pm. While in spring (March 26th to May 8th in 2016), the garden is open untill 6pm. (Last entrance is 30 minutes before closing)
February would be the best season to go and see plum blossoms. And from the beginning of April to the middle of April is usually the best days to go and see cherry blossoms.
You can enjoy the beauty of the flowers and Japanese historical garden until dusk.
On Saturday from 11am, and Monday from 10:30am, you can take a free English guide walk in the garden.
