Osaka Castle is a famous landmark of Osaka in Kansai area and it is a popular sightseeing spot. Of course it is the symbol of Osaka.
Osaka Castle was built in the 16th century. Its construction work had began in 1583 and most buildings such as the castle tower were completed in 1585. The area is over 3,300,000 sq meters and tens of thousands of people were daily mobilized in its construction. It is said that this construction work required advanced technology, such as for removing, cleaning, repairing and finally re-installing and needed more than 50,000 individual copper roof tiles.
One of the charms of this castle is the beauty of its stone wall. Reportedly, there are 40,000 rocks in the wall.
The current castle tower was built in 1931. It has five tiers and is approximately 40 meter high. It is the symbol of Osaka definately.
In summer, the Okawa River in the northwest of the Osaka Castle becomes the stage for the Osaka Tenjin Festival known as one of the three largest festivals in Japan.
In the north of Osaka Castle, there is Sakuranomiya Park on the east bank of Okawa River. It has had a reputation for beautiful cherry blossoms since ancient times.
